VOID FRACTION - Archiving Conjecture
‘Void Fraction - Archiving Conjecture’ is a performative installation and film connecting the library at the Geological Society of London with Aber Quarry on Ynys Môn.
Entangling ourselves with the structure of ‘the geological archive’, we installed our alternate card catalogue in the library at the Geological Society of London. The drawer contained 52 catalogue cards which corresponded to book-shaped ‘bookstones’ made from limestone offcuts. Fourteen of the bookstones were shelved throughout Society’s library, their shelfmarks corresponding to the library’s own book classification system, suggesting that perhaps stones themselves could be part of the collection.
A 5-minute performance was included as part of the Geological Society’s conference “Earth's Canvas: Exploring Geology in Creativity”.
With grateful thanks to the Geologists’ Association Curry Fund and GeoMôn UNESCO Global Geopark for supporting our artwork and participation in the conference!
Finding your artistic voice in the natural world
Very proud to share our previous collaboration with the Geological Society of London. We were invited to present Void Fraction as a masterclass, an example of how artists can engage with geoscience. “Finding your Artistic Voice in the Natural World” shows ways in which geology and art can be creatively combined. This is part of their Geoscience Everyday Competition leading up to Earth Science Week 2023.
